Local Heroes: Women That Inspire

Author: Kaitlyn Savage

March is Women's History Month, and we asked several New Directions' staff to identify a local woman that inspired them in the work they do.

One of the women heroes we highlighted was Crystal Stuck, who is the Community Housing Services Supervisor for the Valley Community Services Board (VCSB). "She is a pillar of advocacy for our unhoused neighbors and does everything she can to help our community."

Ms. Stuck works every day with individuals to access safe, stable, and affordable housing. Ms. Stuck shared her goal to "strengthen our community by helping neighbors build long-term housing security, stability, and hope for the future."

Another inspiring woman is Kathy Jenkins, who was identified as someone "worthy of a highlight." Ms. Jenkins is the Coordinator for the Staunton-Augusta County Domestic Violence Program.

When describing her work, Ms. Jenkins stated, "I advocate for victims/survivors of intimate partner violence as they navigate the complexities of the court system, trying to ensure their rights, safety and voices remain central throughout the process."

Ms. Jenkins continued and noted, "It is an absolute honor to be trusted by these survivors and allowed to assist them through what is often the most difficult time in their lives. If I could give each of them recognition for their courage and strength, I most definitely would.

For our third segment of the series, Christina Davis was honored. Christina Davis is the Coordinated Entry Specialist for the VCSB. One of our staff members said, "Christina is often the very first voice someone hears during a moment of crisis. She approaches every call with patience, empathy, and professionalism, providing thoughtful referrals and staying connected with individuals as their circumstances evolve."

Ms. Davis "helps provide appropriate resources to best meet their needs. That includes referrals to local shelters, food banks, community outreach, and access to supplies for those living outdoors."

Lastly, Ms. Jenkins felt inspired by the Local Hero series and nominated two (2) New Directions' two (2) Court Advocates, Nancy Swift and Erika Zepeda. Ms. Jenkins shared, "I appreciate their hard work with victims in these difficult cases. They are often called upon to sit through intense civil matters and they sit with victims through the entire process, when I am often having to hop from room to room."

"They cover cases in all three jurisdictions and Nancy manages to maintain the LAP data and update training on the LAP protocol." NDC staff appreciate Ms. Jenkins nominations, as they truly are an asset to survivors.

This series notes promising women in our community who inspire and lead.

It is New Directions' honor to give these women the attention they deserve this Women's History Month.
